Robust Fluid Control of Multiclass Queueing Networks

چکیده
This thesis applies recent advances in the field of robust optimization to the optimal control of multiclass queueing networks. We develop models that take into account the uncertainty of interarrival and service time in multiclass queueing network problems without assuming a specific probability distribution, while remaining highly tractable and providing insight into the corresponding optimal control policy. Our approach also allows us to adjust the level of robustness of the solution to trade off performance and protection against uncertainty. We apply robust optimization to both open and closed queueing networks. For open queueing networks, we study control problems that involve sequencing, routing and input control decision, and optimize the total holding cost. For closed queueing networks, we focus on the sequencing problem and optimize the throughput. We compare the robust solutions to those derived by fluid control, dynamic programming and stochastic input control. We show that the robust control policy leads to better performance. Robust optimization emerges as a promising methodology to address a wide range of multiclass queueing networks subject to uncertainty, as it leads to representations of randomness that make few assumptions on the underlying probabilities. It also remains numerically tractable, and provides theoretical insights into the structure of the optimal control policy. Thesis Supervisor: Dimitris J. Stability and optimization of queueing networks and their fluid models
We describe some approaches to the synthesis of optimal policies for multiclass queueing network models based upon the close connection between stability of queueing networks and their associated fluid limit models. It is found that there is also a close connection between optimization of the network and optimal control of the far simpler fluid network model. This observation leads to a new cla...
متن کاملFluid Queueing Networks
We introduce a new method to investigate stability of work-conserving policies in multiclass queueing networks. The method decomposes feasible trajectories and uses linear programming to test stability. We show that this linear program is a necessary and sufficient condition for the stability of all work-conserving policies for multiclass fluid queueing networks with two stations. Furthermore, ...
متن کاملOptimal Control of Stochastic Networks - an Approach via Fluid Models
We consider a general control problem for networks which includes the special cases of scheduling in multiclass queueing networks and routing problems. The fluid approximation of the network is used to derive new results about the optimal control for the stochastic network. The main emphasis lies on the average cost criterion, however the β-discounted as well as the finite cost problem are also...
متن کاملStability of Fluid Networks with Proportional Routing
In this paper we investigate the stability of a class of two-station multiclass fluid networks with proportional routing. We obtain explicit necessary and sufficient conditions for the global stability of such networks. By virtue of a stability theorem of Dai [14], these results also give sufficient conditions for the stability of a class of related multiclass queueing networks. Our study exten...
متن کاملExistence Condition for the Diffusion Approximations of Multiclass Priority Queueing Networks
In this paper, we extend the work of Chen and Zhang (2000b) and establish a new sufficient condition for the existence of the (conventional) diffusion approximation for multiclass queueing networks under priority service disciplines. This sufficient condition relates to the weak stability of the fluid networks and the stability of the high priority classes of the fluid networks that correspond ...
